If we do use the free Wordpress platform like Shelley suggests, we still would need to pay for a new domain name, since there are issues with the current one.
I use 1&1 for my domains and it's usually .99 cents for the first year and then $14 every year after that.

We should make sure that any traffic counts on the free wordpress blog will count if we switch to the pay model. If so, we should start with that since it's what we want longterm. Those traffic numbers matter and we want the links and such to last.

Right now I appear to be signed into the old blogspot account and are able to post. Not sure why that is, but that's ok to post our moved information and new link. I think I'm down as a contributor on that account but not admin. I don't see the blogspot account in with our account and passwords info. Jaime and Ana were looking after the blog as I recall. And yes point taking again, as both left the team and Elisa as well and we lost your team bloggers. So we probably couldn't make the blogspot account work for that reason alone.

ME - I think technically we can get a free domain name with wordpress.com. it would just look like this: vintageandmaincollective.wordpress.com instead of vintageandmaincollective.com.
We can use the wordpress domain until we are ready to switch to a paid platform if we want to keep it completely free, otherwise, buying our own will cost 99 cents for the 1st year and then $15 each subsequent year.
My only hesitation about not buying the domain name now is that it could be taken in a year when we want to buy it.

Hi,
Just catching up here.
I have a lot of experience with this.
1. If you build on the free Wordpress and we get super popular, it will become necessary to move over to a paid site. I know several bloggers who have talked about this and just groaned over the weeks of work. It's a MASSIVE undertaking to convert. Every blogger that's gone through this has said to start with the paying site first. The blog Single Dad Laughing was very vocal about this.
This is why I build BarnOwlVintage like I did. I was going to go for a free site. Then I learned.
Blogger really lacks the functionality of Wordpress. Yes, we have it. But why build something that we'll have to redo?

What can we NOT do on the free Wordpress version that we feel we will need down the road?

Okay, I realize I've been using the wrong language. I have meant this: There is free Wordpress or Self hosted Wordpress. I just read this: boostblogtraffic.com/wordpress-hosting/ Read towards the bottom to learn the downsides to free and rented Wordpress. I have my blog self hosted on my site so I can do whatever I want with zero restrictions. Perhaps since we want to start small, we should just go with free. I realize I've been using the wrong language. I'm sorry!

You are all making excellent points and I totally agree. Since Kate and Pamela are committed to this and are volunteering what I also think will be a tremendous amount of time I want to support their decisions on this. I am a leader on this Team and another Team and even though I don't think I am overextended some weeks it sure feels that way.
I am so grateful we have such dedicated and caring Leaders on this Team. Since I know basically nothing about Blogs I want to support the decisions made here whether we go free or paid. I also agree this is a major under taking and the burn out and frustration will be high on the list of cons.

Hi all! I saw that Tributary Goods was mentioned in discussion, and I thought I could let you know a little of how that group works. The team was divided into tasks - so every member has a definitive requirement each quarter of the year. We were put on the Blog team. There are other teams within the group - some handle social media, some general marketing, some web design. For the Blog team, there is a head editor. She also contributes, but has the task of making sure things get done. We are required to contribute 3 blog posts a quarter. There are also researches on the blog team. Someone to look up stuff, and hunt down permission of photo use.
I think to start a free wordpress would probably be best, and allows for the option to upgrade.

There is a difference between buying/renting a domain name and hosting. Does wordpress allow you to use a custom domain name for their free blog platform?

So the main consensus is to start with the free Wordpress? is that correct?
Shelley - yes, we can still use our own domain with the free worpress blog.
I have gotten anything written for our blog purpose statement yet....will try to get that soon.

Is there a general team email set-up that leaders can access? If not, this would be good to have.... we can register the domain name with it and also have blog admin items directed to that email too.
If anyone is aware of one, please let me know. Otherwise I can set a gmail one up really quickly.
